Never Not Murder steps into 1944 Chicago where honest detective Frankie King navigates a dangerous world of love, betrayal, and corruption while racing to stop a powerful figure’s rise to mayor. This stylish film noir embraces classic tropes—femme fatales, tangled relationships, and moral dilemmas—while reinventing them for the stage. A sharp, witty narrator breaks the fourth wall, guiding audiences through the twists and turns of the story. Meanwhile, a visible, ever-moving “crew” interacts with both actors and audience, transforming the entire theater into a dynamic, immersive experience.
Never Not Murder was written in 2024 by Erica Salas. It's origination was sparked after watching an episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which parodied classic American film noirs. She instantly fell in love with the genre and started writing her own. After months of watching film noirs like The Maltese Falcon, Deadline U.S.A., and neo-noirs like Chinatown, something felt like it was missing. Until one day, while watching The Swan by Wes Anderson, it hit her. She needed crew members to help push the story forward, break the fourth wall, and interact not only with the characters but the narrator and audience as well. Within months, it was debuting on a stage in Chicago, Illinois, at the Annoyance Theater.
